Why Teak?

Teak is one of the most popular timbers for outdoor furniture – and for good reason. Known for its beautiful golden hue and weatherability,

our diverse range of East India Teak furniture is not only stylish and comfortable but also long-lasting.

Built to Last

The durability and weatherability teak are renowned for are all because of its unique naturally occurring features. Teak is a dense tropical hardwood and is one of the only timbers that are rich in natural oils and resins. This makes teak uniquely resistant to water and extreme weather conditions, pest-repellent and safe from decay, making it the perfect choice for your outdoor furniture.

Beautiful & Timeless

Teak not only lasts a lifetime but is also stylish and timeless. When exposed to the sun, with time, your teak furniture will mature into a silver-grey patina. So, whether it be its honey hue or its elegant grey, teak will always be a beautiful addition to your outdoor space.

Teak furniture is also resistant to rust, unlike other timbers that begin to degrade with contact to metal. With East India’s stainless-steel fittings, rest assured your teak furniture will last for decades to come.

Low Maintenance

Once you buy a teak piece, you virtually won’t have to worry about your furniture again! Teak can be left outside untreated and uncovered, only needing an occasional wipe-down with soapy water.

How to Care for your Teak Furniture

Although teak furniture is very low maintenance in comparison to other timbers, it is vital to clean and care for your teak, especially in Australia’s ever-changing climate.

It is also important that when purchasing teak furniture, you first decide if you want to maintain the original honey brown or allow for your teak to develop a silvery grey colour.

Cleaning

To clean your teak furniture, occasionally hose or wipe it down with fresh water. Do not spray the furniture with a high-pressure hose as the pressure can erode the surface of the teak. For stubborn stains, use a mild solution of bleach or detergent with water and a soft brush. Once the furniture is cleaned, rinse it thoroughly to get rid of all the cleaning solution and dirt residue. This method works for both your weathered and oiled furniture.

Weathering

Over time, teak ages to a silvery sheen and acquires ‘checking’ or small cracks in the wood during the weathering process. Both these features are completely cosmetic and do not affect the overall durability and strength of the furniture. If you don't mind the silver patina of aged teak, simply clean the furniture with a soft bristle brush or sponge. Water spots and other discolouration may occur during the weathering process, but these marks will even out with time.

Oiling

If you prefer to maintain teak’s golden colour, we recommend you use Clear Sadolin Hardwood Oil. It is important you choose ‘Clear’ as your colour choice of Sadolin Oil as it doesn’t change the natural shade of the teak and leaves a beautiful satin finish.

Clear Sadolin Hardwood Oil will absorb into the surface of the teak to provide protection against the harsh UV. You will have to reapply the oil every 2-3 months if the furniture is exposed to weather and water, as the rain will wash it out, and if not reapplied, will turn begin to turn grey. If the furniture is undercover, the oil will last longer so reapplication is only needed every few months.

An option for a longer lasting outdoor oil is Sikkens 077 HLSe. However, although this is a more durable oil, it will make the teak appear more golden and have a glossier finish. But it lasts 9-12 months after three coats.
