Caring for your Outdoor Furniture

Aluminium Sling Furniture

Aluminium Sling furniture should be cleaned regularly. Begin by brushing loose dirt and cobwebs from the frames, before hosing down with water in order to get rid of dirt and dust build ups. Stubborn stains on both the aluminium frame and the mesh sling can be cleaned off with warm soapy water and a bristled brush.

If any painted surfaces are scratched down to the metal, it is best to gently sand the area back before applying a matching layer of paint over the top.

It is not recommended to use solvent cleaners on the mesh as it may damage or bleach the material.

Wicker Furniture

To care for your wicker furniture, brush off any loose dirt and hose down your furniture regularly. Clean any fabric with a mild natural soap in lukewarm water. Then, rinse thoroughly to remove soap. Avoid using detergents in place of soap.

If there are stubborn stains or mildew, use sugar soap or soak the fabric for twenty minutes in a very mild solution of bleach. Then, rinse thoroughly afterwards and leave to air dry.

Remember not to subject the wicker to excessive heat, steam or dryers.

Alloy Furniture

Alloy furniture should be cleaned regularly. Begin by brushing loose dirt and cobwebs from the frames, before hosing down with water in order to get rid of dirt and dust build ups.

Stubborn stains can be cleaned off with warm soapy water and a bristled brush.

Fabrics should be washed regularly. If there is a stain on the fabric, try to get it out as soon as possible with soap and water. Do not use any solvent cleaners as they may damage the material.

Kwila Wood Furniture

Kwila furniture, like most timber furniture, just needs to be wiped down and oiled regularly to maintain its appearance.

If left without oiling, kwila timber furniture will last many years but will fade out to a silver-grey colour. Kwila timber is very durable and this fading does not affect the quality, only the appearance.

To prevent fading to maintain the timber’s bright vibrant colour, it is recommended that you oil your kwila outdoor furniture regularly. There are a variety of oils available depending on what features are important to you – whether you want it to last longer or be easier to apply and re-apply, for example some oils need to be removed completely before the new layer can be added, while others only need a quick wipe down before being ready for the next layer. Kwila furniture is known for its high oil content which makes it naturally impervious to insects and most weather conditions. So, if you chose to oil your furniture in order to keep the natural colouring, make sure to use an oil that works well with kwila’s natural oils.

Tip! – Check all nuts, bolts and fasteners periodically as over time the timber can move and the nuts and bolts can become loose.

Teak Timber Furniture

To keep your teak timber furniture clean, gently hose or wipe down the furniture with fresh clean water. Avoid spraying the furniture with a high-pressure hose, as high pressure can erode the surface of the timber.

For stubborn stains use detergent and water with a soft brush. Once the stain is removed, rinse the furniture with clean water to get rid of the cleaning solution and soap.

If left without oiling, teak (similar to kwila) will maintain its strength and durability but will change in appearance and turn a silver-grey colour.

Stone or Ceramic Furniture

Both stone and ceramic table tops are usually sealed during their manufacturing process, however if the table is left out in the elements it is best to reseal the top with a natural stone sealer every 12 months.

After using the table top, be sure to wipe away moisture rings or other spillages from items placed onto of the table as acidic compounds found in products such as tomato sauces, fruit juices, wines, vinegar and coffee can leave permanent stains if left on the table. To prevent this, wipe the stone table top regularly with warm soapy water and a soft cloth. Remember not to scrub too hard or use a coarse brush to clean the table as you are cleaning the sealer that is coating the stone, not the tough stone itself.

Rinse the table with plenty of clean water to remove any soap residue and dry it afterwards to prevent water spots appearing.

Tip! – If the table is going to be outside in direct weather consider getting a cover to provide it with extra protection.
